Educational psychologist Gleeson to discuss ELLs in New Zealand

Dr. Margaret Gleeson, of New Zealand’s Victoria University, will discuss educational approaches of secondary school teachers to English language learners in New Zealand in a public presentation from 10 a.m. to noon on May 3.

Gleeson, a senior lecturer at Victoria University’s School of Educational Psychology and Pedagogy, will share the results of a qualitative study she performed that showed that the approaches secondary subject teachers in New Zealand took to teaching English language learners were shaped by their disciplinary epistemologies. The talk, titled, “It’s the Nature of the Subject,” will take place in Conference Room 1252 of the Education Sciences Building.

The lecture, sponsored by WIDA, is open to the public, and may be especially pertinent for researchers interested in educational linguistics, content-based language teaching, adult and secondary school literacy, and teacher professional learning and development.

Minority Student Achievement Network to Host 2013 MSAN Institute

The Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) will host its 2013 MSAN Institute April 22 - 23, 2013 on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The MSAN Institute, which will take place at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St., is an intensive professional development opportunity focused on developing equity-focused leadership and increasing cultural competency. Conference attendees include teachers, principals, and district-level leaders.

MSAN is a national coalition of multiracial, suburban-urban school districts that have come together to achieve the parallel goals of closing racial achievement gaps while ensuring all students achieve to high levels. To this end, MSAN has built a community of leaders who engage in common practices that support the Network’s mission: to understand and change school practices and structures that keep racial achievement gaps in place. 

The opening keynote presentation will be provided by Dr. Frank Hernandez, Dean of the College of Education at the University of Texas-Permian Basin. His presentation is titled “Countering the Mindsets that are Harmful to the Success of our Children” and will take place at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 22. Later in the day, researchers, consultants, and educational leaders from six MSAN school districts will host a dozen workshops focusing on supporting educators in the areas of equity-centered leadership and cultural competence. Educators will also be engaging in large and small group discussions, job-alike conversations, and district planning sessions.

The highly successful, two-day Institute has been designed to provide participants with the opportunity:

• To engage in self-assessment at the individual and institutional levels.
• To share the latest research and promising practices that assist educators in meeting our shared goals, and to celebrate successes and gain inspiration and motivation.
• To formulate ideas for actionable steps participants can take back to their schools and districts to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas of change to achieve the goal of eliminating race as a predictive factor in student achievement scores.
