Developing Culturally Responsive Native Language Assessment Systems

WIDA researchers are assisting the Lower Kuskokwim School District, Central Alaska, to develop a reliable and valid proficiency test for their native language, Yugtun. The test is being developed for PreK-6 students. A Community Based Participatory Research model allows stakeholders to develop a shared ownership of language being developed and tested. WIDA researchers provide technical assistance as the district’s expert group builds capacity in language test development. This five-year project is funded by the Office of English Language Acquisition in the U.S. Department of Education.
